‘Volunteer Week’ in New Zealand is coming up and with it the chance to find out what people are doing in your community. For most of the time, volunteering goes along quietly, with people from all walks of life helping others in all sorts of ways. Volunteers don’t do it for the fame and glory – but we think volunteers are awesome and deserve some celebrating! From 19-25 June, as part of Volunteer Week, there will be a special focus and celebration of all the kindness and good work being done around Aotearoa. These people are an inspiration – and you can join them! You can even help out as a volunteer at Creative Junk!
Volunteering is kindness in action
Volunteering is a marvellous way to connect with other people in your community, give much needed help, and have fun while you are doing it. Becoming a volunteer and part of our #aotearoaofkindness is easy. Have a think about what you are good at or interested in, how much time you have to spare – and get cracking! There are all sorts of activities that you can take part in, from cleaning up our beaches to planting trees; from giving an elderly person a lift to an appointment, making cups of tea, baking for charities or befriending a person with learning difficulties to name just a few.
Find your regional volunteer centre on this link, where you can download resources and see all the current volunteer opportunities in your region. For more ideas, check out Seek Volunteer and Do Good Jobs.
At Creative Junk we don’t know what we would do without our team of wonderful volunteers. If you feel passionate about recycling and preventing waste going into landfill, consider spending an hour or so a week helping out in our Christchurch warehouse. We always need help with sorting and displaying our materials, assisting customers and packaging up our creative boxes. We are a friendly bunch and always keen to welcome new people. Come and see us!
Volunteering is a two-way street – in return for your time, you will gain valuable experience, meet new people and help your community to thrive. What could be better than that? Hooray for volunteers!!
