“Our Story” thanks to UC internship students
Our Vision: A world where we recycle, reuse and rethink in a creative and imaginative way.
The Early Childhood Centre Incorporated trades as ‘Creative Junk’ has been operating in and amongst the Christchurch and wider community since 1981, with the aim to “provide an affordable, and extensive range of materials, collected from industry to promote creative and imaginative happenings in the community for children, their families and related community services.” Overall, Creative Junk believes that we have lived up to and beyond our mission statement. Our presence in the Christchurch community has prevented tonnes of creative materials from ending up in landfill. The early 2000s witnessed Creative Junk expand our focus to the environment, as the need for climate action increased. Over the years, we have faced numerous challenges, including relocating premises at least 7 times, and recovering from the Christchurch Earthquakes.
Today, we have our eggs in many different (recycled) baskets. We run a retail store at 25 Disraeli Street which offers a multitude of craft supplies and repurposed materials at affordable prices. This is open to the public four days a week Wednesday to Friday 11-5pm, Saturday 11-1pm. At Disraeli Street we run Makerspace – a hireable area within our retail store which includes the use of sewing machines and other crafting equipment. Recently we have also begun a courier service sending out boxes of creative materials, so that we can reach more communities that don’t have access to affordable craft supplies in their area. This service involves us putting together a bespoke box of creative materials, which can then be shipped around New Zealand. So flick us an email at info@creativejunk.org.nz to organize your box today!
Not only do we provide the New Zealand community with affordable and sustainable craft supplies, but we also provide many educational services as well. We run tailored workshops for children and adults in which attendees learn how to craft a wide array of practical creations from repurposed materials. These are either held on site at Creative Junk, or we can travel to locations within Canterbury. So, pop over to our Facebook page to stay updated on our events or contact us if you’re looking for something special!
But where do all our repurposed materials come from? The materials used for workshops as well as stocking our retail store are found and sourced by our resident junk experts. We work with many different local industries and businesses, helping them to direct their waste away from landfill, as well as allowing the general public to donate various types of household waste to us. To collect waste we supply businesses with drums to store their waste in, and we then collect it ourselves in our trusty van that can often be seen driving the streets of Christchurch stacked to the brim with repurposed materials harvested from the urban jungle. So, if you’ve got some goodies at home or at work, give us a call or pop in store to donate them to a worthy cause!
But wait, there’s more! We love to help out in the community and have been involved in so many wonderful events over the years such as KidsFest, Santa Parade, Repurpose and Repair expo and Children’s day.
Creative Junk has something for everyone, and we are so looking forward to many more years of being a part of the Christchurch community. So, don’t wait any longer, come visit us today to see just what all the fuss is about!
Can’t wait to see you!
The Creative Junk Team 😊
